10 ways to update your home for autumn
The changing of the clocks brings the end of British Summer Time (BST) and the official start of autumn. Crisp sunny days while wrapped up in warm and cosy jackets, not to mention the fall colours drawn in from the leaves and autumn light - it’s kinda our idea of perfection. With a new season lurking, the decorator’s itch is well and truly upon us and as always, we’re looking at ways to update our home without having to spend a fortune or get too dirty. If you’re looking for some ideas for a seasonal refresh, while also including our signature quirky and eclectic W.A.Green style, here’s ten ways to update your home for autumn.
1 Brighten up your “Doortrait”
Do you know how much of an impact a fresh lick of paint can have on your doorway? Your front door is the first thing you see when entering your house, and coming home to a light and bright home can be a game changer when it comes to setting up your mood for the evening. Here’s your chance to get brave with colour and show off how house proud you really are. We’re rooting for oranges, yellows and greens - come on, go wild, you can do it! Avery Yellow from the Luxe colour palette by new toxin-free Painthouse is amazing.
2 Light it up
Never underestimate the importance of good lighting. A simple ceiling light will not do and instead you need to be thinking about how you use a room and layering lighting within it. Table lamps, floor lamps, uplighters; they are all part of a good room set-up and can help you to relax and unwind or be more energised and productive. Your selection needn’t be classic and boring, there’s always room for statement pieces to get involved. Here at W.A.Green we have a number of unique lighting options for you to choose from.
3 Go Orange
Orange is a key colour for this season and we’re well and truly in love with the positive effect this hue can have. Completely apt for a season of pumpkins and fireworks, using orange accents in your home will bring a layer of warmth and a sense of cosiness, while also brightening up a darker room. Orange is the colour of energy, just what you need for those shorter days and darker evenings - productivity is hard to come by during autumn, are we right? Make a statement with our Jonathan Adler Brigitte Chair or add pops of colour via products such as Silken Favours cushions.
4 Cosy up
Refreshing your textiles is always part of a seasonal strategy, but we have to admit that getting out our cosier cushions and soft furnishings is a rather exciting prospect. Switch your linen cushions for velvet and knitted options - we’re lusting after everything that Giannina Capitani produces and W.A.Green favourite Silken Favours will add luxurious silk and velvet with a pop of tropical colour for keeping things hot and spicy. Add a chunky knitted throw to your bedroom for extra Sunday snuggles. Extra points if it’s cheeky like this one from Helen B.
5 Keep the Warmth In
As the temperature drops, it’s now also the time to thicken up your curtains. It’s obvious to switch any linen or cotton versions out for thicker alternatives but did you know that can also add a thermal curtain liner to an existing pair to keep the warmth in. Energy-saving solutions - we approve!
6 Use Sumptuous Styling
Leading on from switching up to more luxurious fabrics, try to adopt this thinking with the rest of your abode. Darker and longer evenings make for a more sensual approach and using candles and moodier lighting will help to set the scene. Bring in brass accents to complement velvet textiles and swap your playful dinnerware for something a little more sexy. These smoky amber wine glasses will do just the trick. Dinner candles are a great addition to a hallway console or just for adding a little bit more glam to your dinner table, even if it is just beans on toast! Stock up on these colourful creations from True Grace for a festive feel all year round.
7 Perfect your Autumn Scent
Autumn scents tend to bring nature into the home with woody elements as well as earthy tones. These room sprays from Cire Trudon are a W.A.Green staple. Ernesto packs a punch with a heady mix of tobacco and leather, while Abd Ed Kader gives off notes of mint, blackcurrant and vanilla - the perfect scents for adding a welcoming autumnal touch to your living room, hallway and beyond.
8 Experiment with foliage
Wreaths aren’t just for Christmas; get creative before with autumn foliage and bring in a little nature from the outdoors. Fall is a pretty big deal in America and we’re jumping on board the bandwagon, experimenting with the organic rust, yellow and orange shades brought in from outside. If you’re not quite up to scratch with your wreath-making skills, simply pop a few faux stems of Maple Spray or red berries in a vase for a little bit of the fall feels. We like to hang ours from the ceiling to add drama and make a soft romantic setting.
9 Style a “Shelfie"
Sometimes all you need is a shelfie refresh to make a world of difference to how you feel about a room. Simple updates like this can change the whole vision of an interior scheme and can help to scratch that decorator’s itch, while allowing you to give your shelves a right good clean. In need of some inspiration? Shop our shelfie section for bits and bobs to add some colour and that extra wow factor.
10 Bring the spa to you
Those Autumn feels tend to make you want to nest, so why not embrace it and bring the spa to you! Update your towels and ensure that your dressing gown is in tip-tip shape for a suitably luxurious bath. Litter quirky candles around rooms and add faux foliage (otherwise known as fauxliage) for a relaxing ambience. Who needs a Champneys anyway?
