THE W.A.GREEN GUIDE TO CHARLOTTE ROAD
People often ask us for recommendations of the local area when they pop into the store. They also ask our founder Zoe why she picked the area of Shoreditch and specifically Charlotte Road. It’s something we love to be asked - we love championing the local area and our home!
Shoreditch is the official capital of health in the capital. Every gym worth it’s bacon sandwich is here from Frame to Fierce Yoga. We’re avid gym bunnies too don’t you know. According to the 2018 Time Out City Life Index millennials are four times more likely to have exercised than gone clubbing this week, while Londoners who exercise more are more likely to feel happy and less likely to feel stressed. We’re all about that happy movement, feeling good and staying positive so we think we’re a good fit amongst the smoothie bars and health food bistros.
Despite the health kick, Shoreditch has also retained its energy – it’s home to some of the best bars, clubs and restaurants in town and each month there seems to be a new hotel opening or residential housing block going up. It’s a place of growth yet still a playground for creativity and start ups.
Charlotte Road is at the heart of the movement. We’re lucky enough to be sandwiched between two main roads with the lovely Rivington Street running directly through us too; it’s made for a fun triangle of shops, restaurants and bars. The community buzz amongst the other traders is wonderful and we’re so pleased to be bringing you this guide to Charlotte Road to showcase some of our friends. Let us know if you visit!
A W.A.Green favourite, but something that the whole team can agree on is the wonders of Ruby’s sausage sandwiches. Especially if you’ve had a few too G&Ts the night before. Grab yourself a Cumberland sausage in ciabatta with roasted onions and fresh tomato and take in the East London vibes. Don’t forget to also inhale their super strong coffees while you’re at it! Weekdays only.

Merchants Tavern is housed in a Victorian warehouse and former apothecary which makes for a rather cool interior aesthetic. The all day bar and dining experience serves modern European cuisine with seasonal focuses. Wholesome, honest and carefully crafted cooking at the heart of the kitchen and it’s menu. We often pop in here for a tasty plate in a chic setting.

There’s a new Italian in town and if you’re looking for somewhere with fancy interior design and a delicious menu to boot, this is your place. In fact, you may have already seen the hype over on Instagram for this new addition - granted, we weren’t a fan of the two-hour-long queues either. Nestled at the end of Charlotte Road, Gloria is a hive of fringed cushions, huge lamp shades and cosy velvet booths. Try the truffle specialities but don’t forget to save some room for one of their huge desserts too!

Gianfilippo’s Bottega Prelibato has established itself as a firm favourite in Shoreditch thanks to it authentic Italian food and an intimate, lively atmosphere. Just around the corner from the shop, the restaurant serves up seasonal, mouth-watering dishes ranging from a platter of oozing burrata and salty-sweet Parma ham to a comforting bowl of hand-made pappardelle with a rich wild mushroom sauce. All washed down nicely with impeccably chosen Italian wine of course. If you’ve not got time for dinner (or you made the mistake of forgetting to book), the deli is a treasure trove of artisanal cured meats, organic vegetables and fresh snacks.

The best chicken sandwich in town! Butchies used to be a street food favourite but the company has now opened the doors to its first spot in Shoreditch. They sell New York-inspired fried chicken sandwiches which we’re more than happy to chow down on. The space is casual and the staff are friendly, but be warned the Butchies hot sauce is savage - just how we like it!

Oh yes, we do love our Italian restaurants in Shoreditch. Popolo means “local people” or “community” in Italian and this small independent restaurant with Middle Eastern and Moorish influence serves up some of the best pastas and incredible small plates to share amongst mates. Skimmed concrete floors and exposed brick walls give this restaurant a utilitarian feel and you can sit at the counter and chat to the chefs as they work their magic too.

Drink coffee at Origin's flagship shop. The Shoreditch cafe hosts the full range of monthly feature coffees showcasing the very best in speciality coffee. With a brew bar and illustrative mural taking centre stage, you’ll find some of the best coffee here as well as some pretty cool street art to fit in with the Shoreditch aesthetic.

Get your hair tamed at Kaizo. The name “Kaizo” is an anagram of owner’s Yuka and Lorenzo’s name and in Japanese it means to customise or transform. Their ultimate aim was a hair salon where their distinctive style would have a place of its own and hey, now they have it, and we love their vibe.

The Bricklayers Arms
A traditional boozer and one that holds fond memories of lost nights for our founder, Zoe. (The less said about that the better!). Known for it's anything goes vibe rather than decor you never know if it's going to be raucous or relaxed. It's tiny secret garden is full of street art tags and the loo's are from a film set (you can guess which one) but it's beauty is that it makes everyone feel welcome and who can say no to that.
It’s no secret that we’re lovers of craft here at W.A.Green and this family run business is a wonderful shop and workshop to visit for great bags that will last a lifetime. Alfie Douglas uses leathers of premium grade, sourced from the best tanneries in the world. Each leather is carefully prepared using natural vegetable extracts from a variety of wood, bark, fruit, roots and leaves with no harsh chemicals. The end result is simple, premium leather bags and accessories which are all designed and made in England.

We’re getting married in the morning! No, we’re not. But if we were, we’d certainly have paid a visit to Grace Loves Lace, a bridal shop specialising in effortless, luxurious and timelessly sophisticated wedding gowns handmade from European laces and silks. Perfect for the modern, free-spirited woman unbound by monotony and tradition.

It’s here that you’ll find brands which still hold their obscurity in the western world. Plus, WHAT A GREAT NAME! Head to the minimal store to find adult and children's garments, footwear, homeware and accessories.
