VINTAGE WALL HANGING | PEGASUS & PEACOCKS
Vintage Suzani from the late Soviet Era, 1970-1980. Originating from Uzbekistan and heavily influenced by it's Russian occupation. Beautiful embroidery created by artisanal kolkhozes (collective farms) to commemorate special events and holidays.
Suzani literally translates to “needlework” but commonly refers to silk-embroidered wall hangings.
Breaking all the rules of Islamic art, this epic depiction of pegasus in the folk art style is a true original. The representation of animals as a subject was a taboo and we can imagine Pegasus framed by two peacocks would have turned a few heads. A real showcase of couching and chain stitch embroidery techniques popular in Uzbekistan.
W.A.Green says "Charming, light and vivacious you can see how much craft, skill and enjoyment went into making this unique and treasured wall tapestry".
